San Pietro in Montorio

2014 MFA Show

There were some progress in the robot project, but a lot of things need to be replaced to work as I designed.

Rhino Drawing for robot hand

Instead of normal human hand, I chose to use the shape of dump truck as a replacement of human hand and glass. This tiny and adorable toy has several abilities; the lifting bucket, driving, wheel movement, and headlight.

This is second printing after the printing below, I place the model vertically, this reduces the chance to skip some layers while I refill resin in the middle of printing. It took 24 hours and the program create 0.05mm of  2686 layers.

Print with the Formlab printer, it took 13 hours.

Most of Fused Deposition Modeling style 3D printers are supplied their materials from abs roll of filament. Sometimes the filament is kinked then break. In that case, several layers are skipped over, then this can be break point after 6 hours printing.

3D printer comparison  Afinia vs Makerbot

2013-09-19 21.01.33.jpg

 Afinia (white) Makerbot (black)

I printed out same object with two different printing machines as the best quality that the print able to make. In my view, Afinia
machine gives more detailed surface than a Makerbot. However, Afinia machine spends more materials on a support structure, that is the program is designed to fill all the hollow space as much as it can. In other words, Makerbot has a advanced tool path creating system that make this machine spend least material for the support structure. However, Makerbot transmit STL file to their one tool path file, you cannot print out without the program.
