Since my parents are devout Buddhists, I had visited the Buddhist temples with them many times. Because of the religious repression in the Chosun dynasty, most of the temples are located halfway up the mountains. As a result, the style of architecture of most traditional temples has turned into the forms of nature.
Every time I visited these places as a youth, I felt that they were antiquated in some obscure ways. However, I now realize that the shapes within the architecture are close to the forms of nature itself. For example, the main columns are normally erected with thick pine trunks (left with their natural, un-planed edges), sometimes, the temple's structure is accompanied with curvilinear tree forms. Thus, the lines in many Korean Buddhist temples are mostly fluid curves or having specific ratios, unlike those of the Parthenon temple.
My inspiration for art projects are informed by these design attributes of Korean traditional manufacturing processes. For further studies, I tried to convert this concept to computerized manufacturing. To combine these two matters, I began to learn about 3D fabrication, and then created some of machines by myself to deepen understanding.

The subject of this concept was traditional door pattern in one of Korean Buddhist temple. Construction processing of Korean traditional architecture has performed with a principle of harmony with the nature. In terms of making windows, the shaping of the pattern depends entirely on a wood panel and hands of a carpenter. The shape is expressed after instant interaction between the carpenter and woods. Although, the result of the work of human is always same as the machine does, it has a beauty of atypical object.
To create carved surface by hands, I draw various engraved pattern with Rhino program, then arranged randomly, this irregular pattern was used to shave wood panel by CNC machine. As a result, the output of machine created pattern is not exactly same as human does, it was successful to break from the convention such as numerically increasing pattern by algorithm program such as Grasshopper.
